Focus: 15 Toward an Abandoned City
Air date: February 14, 2008
In the poetry collection known as Manyoshu, dated to the VII century AD, it is said that Yamato (the ancient name for Japan) was the land where kotodama, the power of words flourished. It is not only the Japanese who believed that the words had spiritual power. Since the time of the ancient Greeks, the concept of logos identified the word as divine order if not a divine entity itself. We have to realize the fact that whether good or evil, once the word is said, the meaning of the word would be engraved in the speaker's mind and would profoundly influence the future of the speaker and his/her environment.
