The word Chinkon (calming the spirits) is used to describe our thoughts about the deceased, but it has another meaning. It is believed that the living human's soul is unstable and unless it is tied to the body, it will deviate. In the early Meiji Era, Chikaatsu Honda influenced such religious figures as Onisaburo Deguchi by setting up a system of ancient Shinto with Chinkon and Kishin (letting a divine spirit descend to a human body) as its core.
