Mizuho Nishikubo's Giovanni's Island was greeted with the Platinum Grand Prize at the 17th Future Film Festival (FFF 2015), held in Bologna, Italy, from May 5 to 10, 2015. The Platinum Grand Prize is FFF's highest recognition. The screening at the Future Film Festival marked the film's Italian premiere.

The FFF jury motivated the award as follows:
"For the scriptwriting quality, the twist between private emotions and greater historical events, the elegance, the poetic touch and the epic scale. Animation visuals are perfectly functional to the story, and have the strength to convey great emotions to adults and children alike."

The Future Film Festival is one of the most prominent international genre film festivals in Italy, showcasing the latest trends of digital technology and animation (whether 2D or 3D) in modern filmmaking.
