Fast Food Grifters' North American Premiere in Vancouver

September 7, 2006

Mamoru Oshii's Tachigui: The Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters (original title: Tachiguishi Retsuden) will have its North American premiere at the Dragons and Tigers Section of the 25th annual Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), held September 28 - October 13, 2006 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The film festival shows works from around the world, and has established a reputation as the largest exhibitor of Asian films outside of Asia. More than 150,000 people are expected to attend 550 screenings of over 300 films from more than 50 countries. The festival's purpose is to encourage the understanding of other nations through the art of cinema and to foster the art of cinema.

"Animation giant Oshii Mamoru offers an alternative history of post-war Japan as seen through the rise of fast-food chains - and the 'careers' of various legendary figures who expertly conned free meals from them. [...] Anyone who comes to Tachigui with a working knowoledge will have a wild-ride. But beginners are welcome too. [...] There's a lot of genuine erudition buried in the gags and parodies, and the whole thing delivers a scathing critique of the hollowness of the Japanese 'economic miracle'. Concentrated essence of Oshii!" (Tony Rayns, VIFF Programmer)
