An up-and-coming young talent from the Utagawa school, the most powerful atelier in Japan. Despite the Utagawas being Hokusai's greatest rivals, Kuninao is a fervent admirer of Hokusai's art. Cheerful, unpretentious and easy-going, he immediately befriends Zenjiro. However, Zenjiro clearly suffers in his pride at the comparison with the younger and more successful Kuninao.
