Torogai explains that what lays in Chagum's body is the egg of the Water Spirit, that appears once in one hundred years. Chagum was chosen by the Spirit of Nayugu to be the "Guardian of the Sacred Spirit." The old Torogai asks Balsa if she will be going to look after the boy all her life. It meant Balsa would have to guard not only the life of Chagum, but also be responsible for the lives of the people of New Yogo and the Yakoo, and protect them from calamities including the draught that would prevail if she failed to protect Chagum. But Balsa had already made up her mind...
